i have a question about websites.?

November 17, 2010 - 11:42 pm 2 Comments

from what I gather owners of websites get monthly reports of their visitors (web traffic or something like that). what I would like to know is do they get detailed reports (such as IP addresses with names) or merely the number of people who have visited their website? and should the case be that they do get IPs as well, can they snoop around into visitors` computers (as in see what`s on their HDD; can they, say, see what movies one has in a folder?)?
thank you for your time.

Webservers create all sorts of logs, these include the IP address of every visitor to the website. If you host a website on someone elses servers then it’s up to the host whether they release those logs to the website owner.

There are also third party statistics gatherers that people can place on their websites and these too collect the IP address of the visitors.

There is a load of rubbish talked about what you can and can’t do once you have someone’s IP address. Getting someone’s IP address is a tiny step towards actaully doing something malicious to a computer at that address. In fact, as an answer to those people who say you should never give your IP address to anyone, here’s mine – 71.171.230.236 Do your worst!

So the answer to the second part of the question is no, it takes a lot of work to go snooping around someone’s computer even if you have the IP address and they can’t see what’s on your computer.

To further let you understand what happens when you go to any website, there is a lot of information that is passed between your computer and theirs. This information includes…

IP address of the client computer
ID of the client computer
UserID of the client computer
Date / time when the server finished the file request – day/month/year:hour:minute:second zone
Method used for the file request
File requested
Protocol used for the request
Status returned from server to client
File size returned to client
File referrer – This gives the site that the client reports having been referred from
User agent – This is the identifying information that the client browser reports about itself.

I run my own webserver and people are foerver trying to break out of the server directories into the system directories but so far, no one has – i’ve been running that server for 11 years.

If you’re interested in what these server logs look like then you can view parts of mine (don’t worry, the URLs are safe and I make no money from any of my visitors, I refuse to put any advertising on my websites) …

http://brisray.com/comp/cwserver2.htm – shows what the raw server logs look like. I’ve also included parts from my error logs and show where people have been trying to snoop around my server
http://brisray.com/utils/alogs/ and http://brisray.com/utils/wlogs/ show the server logs after they’ve been put through an analyzer program.

How much website traffic does the average consumer website get?

November 16, 2010 - 2:47 am 1 Comment

I know this question is extremely vague but I have been asked this question by a client and need to present them with an answer. How much website traffic does the average online consumer website generate? In other words, what is "good" traffic? The problem I’m having is basing this off of some sort of statistic. I know there’s no one right answer, but anything to gauge what "good" is in terms of inputs (i.e. any form of inputs such as advertising cost). Thanks, any feedback is greatly appreciated!

In my last 10 years of experience as SEO, I would suggest a minimum traffic a website must be receiveing is 400-500 daily visitors, if anything beyond is considered not acceptable

Is there any one out that has true knowledge of companies that "Really" do a great job at generating Traffic on a web site. Please if you know for sure let me know the Company’s name. There are so many Misleading companies out there I don’t know who to trust. If you can really help your knowledge
Would be greatly appreciate.

A good SEO program will generate traffic to your site overtime.

there are 2 parts to it:
On-Page SEO – Preparing your website/web pages.
Off-Page SEO – Marketing and promotion of your site.

I have an article on SEO you may find useful:

I agree, there are many misleading ideas on this topic:
Stay away from "#1 GUARANTEED!"
Stay away from "automated submission"
Stay away from "promoted in 1000 of sites, engines, etc". Focus on quality not quantity.

Finally stick to someone that has a methodical approach and is capable to provide you a monthly report ‘and prove’ of their efforts that month and an outline for the next month.

Ask tons of questions… SEO is a strategic commitment and it take some months to see results so you have to feel comfortable with the person you are hiring. There is not a magic bullet.

My goal writing this article is to help people avoid the SEO fairytales… I hope to have more articles soon… just need some spare time.

Google is testing robot cars that navigate interstates and city streets without a human touch
Published: Sunday, October 10, 2010 | 6:54 PM ET
Canadian Press Daniel Wagner, The Associated Press
WASHINGTON – Google Inc. is road-testing cars that steer, stop and start without a human driver, the company says.

The goal is to "help prevent traffic accidents, free up people’s time and reduce carbon emissions" through ride sharing and "the new ‘highway trains of tomorrow,’" project leader Sebastian Thrun wrote Saturday on Google’s corporate blog.

The cars are never unmanned, Thrun wrote. He said a backup driver is always behind the wheel to monitor the software.

It’s not the first signal that Google wants to change how people get from place to place. In a speech Sept. 29 at the TechCrunch "Disrupt" conference, Google CEO Eric Schmidt said "your car should drive itself. It just makes sense."

"It’s a bug that cars were invented before computers," Schmidt said.

The cars have travelled a total of 140,000 miles on major California roads without much human intervention, according to Google’s corporate blog.

The Mountain View, Calif.-based technology giant has sent seven test cars a total of 1,000 miles without a human touching the controls at all, the New York Times reported. The newspaper published a report on the cars earlier Sunday.

The cars know speed limits, traffic patterns and road maps, Thrun’s posting says. They use video cameras, radar sensors and lasers to detect other cars.

Driving between Northern California and Southern California, the cars have navigated San Francisco’s curvy Lombard Street, Los Angeles’ Hollywood Boulevard and the cliff-hugging Pacific Coast Highway, the blog says.

Engineers consider the cars safer because they react more quickly than humans, the New York Times said. It said Google has not revealed how it hopes to profit from the research.

The company is flush with cash, though, and pushing numerous projects such as the cars that are unrelated to its core business, said Rob Enderle, principal analyst with the Enderle Group in San Jose, Calif.

"The word ‘focus’ is a word Google has never learned," Enderle said, pointing to projects involving electricity distribution, vehicle design and artificial intelligence. He said cars that can drive themselves would allow commuters more time to surf the web, something Google would encourage.

Still, Enderle said, industry leaders such as Volkswagen and Intel Corp. are working on similar technology. He said "driverless" vehicles will make computers more like the robots imagined in the 1920s, rather than the tabletop data processors we use today.

The blog says the technology is being developed by scientists who were involved in an earlier set of unmanned car races organized by the government’s Defence Advance Research Projects Agency.

I just needed to answer some few questions about this:

Identify the significance of the current event. Why is it important to know about the story?

Identify the relevance to curriculum. How does it relate to science and why?

If Google makes car which drives without driver, it makes sense. This is a news and people are waiting for such scientific developments.

Science has provided us many tools and facilities. These have not been conceived, developed and implemented in a day or week or months. It has taken years, sometime centuries. If we have to grow as human being on earth, we have to have story.

Driver less car is a great idea. If company like google change its Portfolio to enter in automobiles, it makes news from various points of view, Commercial, social, and political.

If it is introduced in course curriculum, it makes further sense. Today when Class X students study Windws 95 in all schools in India, IT MAKE LEARNING SENSE. IT IS DIFFERENT THAT WE HAVE TO UNLEARN THOSE OUTDATED FEATURES OF WINDOWS.

Let our young students learn drier less CARS!!
