Can you truly describe Cash for Clunkers a successful program?

March 26, 2010 - 10:18 am 8 Comments

Didn’t Nancy Pelosi get all fidgety w/ excitement about the ’success’ of Cash for Clunkers?

What then would you make of the following update?

UPDATE: The Washington Times reports this morning:

The U.S. Transportation Department, billions of dollars behind in paying "cash-for-clunkers" rebates, has hired private contractors and solicited volunteers from the Federal Aviation Administration and its own executive ranks to work overtime to clear the backlog.

Employees of the FAA’s air-traffic-control unit were asked to help, but the Transportation Department stressed Friday that essential safety personnel were not diverted from their duties.

A total of 1,200 workers, including about 300 contractors from Citigroup, the financial services giant, are now working seven days a week to review applications and reimburse auto dealers for rebates advanced to customers, officials said.

On Thursday, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said the program would stop taking applications Monday at 8 p.m. to provide an "orderly wind-down" and ease uncertainty about when funds would run out.

The National Automobile Dealers Association, which had endorsed the move, urged the Obama administration late Friday to extend the deadline because the program’s Web site was crashing.

"Many dealers are working round-the-clock to submit their ‘clunkers’ applications to meet the administration’s deadline," the group said. "Despite these efforts, computer issues may prevent some ‘clunker’ applications from being submitted in time, through no fault of the dealers."

AND WE’RE GOING TO TRUST THEM TO A TRILLION DOLLAR OVERHAUL OF HEALTHCARE??

A program’s success is measured in terms of its goals. The Cash for Clunkers program had the modest goals of removing a certain number of gas guzzlers from the road and stimulating sales in the auto industry. Those goals have been met and exceeded. The program has therefore been a great success.

This kind of thing is legal in Mexico?

March 24, 2010 - 9:57 am 1 Comment

Look at this stupid Mexican:

http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/01/13/daughter.for.sale/index.html?iref=mpstoryview

Police: Man sold teen daughter into marriage for cash, beer, meat

(CNN) — A California man sold his 14-year-old daughter to an 18-year-old man for cash, beer and meat — then called police when the prospective bridegroom didn’t live up to his end of the deal, authorities said Tuesday.

Marcelino de Jesus Martinez faces felony charges, according to police in Greenfield, California.

Marcelino de Jesus Martinez, 36, of Greenfield, California, was arrested Monday and booked into the Monterey County Jail, Greenfield police said in a statement. He faces felony charges of receiving money for causing a person to cohabitate, police said.

Martinez had arranged through a third party to have his daughter marry the older teenager, identified by authorities as Margarito de Jesus Galindo, of Gonzales, California. In exchange, Galindo was to pay Martinez $16,000 and provide him with 160 cases of beer, 100 cases of soda, 50 cases of Gatorade, two cases of wine, and six cases of meat, Greenfield Police Chief Joe Grebmeier told CNN.

All those involved in the case are from the western Mexican state of Oaxaca, the police chief said. In the Oaxacan community, such an agreement is "normal and honorable," he said. "In California, it’s against the law."

In Oaxacan culture, the food and beverages are provided by a prospective bridegroom for the wedding, Grebmeier said.

Authorities believe the young girl went with Galindo willingly, and no coercion was involved, he said. However, the girl is four years younger than California’s age of consent, although the law does allow 16-year-olds to marry with parental consent.

"The 14-year-old juvenile moved in with Galindo and when payments were not received, the father, Martinez, called Greenfield PD to bring back the daughter," according to a written police statement.

The girl was reported as a runaway juvenile on December 18, Grebmeier said, and police took a missing-persons report and put out a flier.

But "as we investigated, it started to develop into something that may not have been a runaway," he said, and police began to believe Martinez wanted them to bring back his daughter, since he had received no payment.

On January 2, Galindo and the girl returned from a trip to Soledad, a town a few miles north of Greenfield, and were interviewed. Police learned the couple had never married, but had engaged in sexual relations, Grebmeier said.

Galindo and Martinez were neighbors at an apartment complex and were apparently from the same area in Mexico, the police chief said. A third party was brokering the marriage deal, he said, and is cooperating with authorities. But the young couple apparently left for Soledad before the negotiations were complete.

Martinez was arrested Sunday after undergoing additional questioning by police, Grebmeier said. He remained jailed Tuesday.

Galindo was cited for statutory rape and released, Grebmeier said. The girl was returned to her family, he said, as authorities believe she is in no danger. However, police reported the case to child protection officials.

The Greenfield area has had a large influx of Oaxacans. A presentation on understanding Oaxacan culture is posted on the Greenfield police Web site.

"Arranged marriages are common in several cultures, and this is not an issue among consenting adults over the age of 18," police said in the statement. "But California has several laws regarding minors, the age of consent and human trafficking."

Police are trying to be culturally sensitive, Grebmeier told CNN, but "when I’m in Mexico, I have to respect Mexican laws. When you’re in the United States, you have to respect United States laws. That’s the bottom line."

He said he wanted to send a message to immigrant communities that such behavior is unacceptable. He said his department has long heard rumors of children as young as 12 being sold or offered for sale. The Greenfield police statement said arranged marriages between young girls and older men "have become a local problem."

Greenfield is about 140 miles southeast of San Francisco.
In case you didn’t know it, esé, you’re in America now. Start acting like it!

Unfortunately when this Government approves open borders it will be legal here. We cant let that happen though

Should Internet Be Regulated?

March 22, 2010 - 10:07 am 4 Comments

I took this article and copied and pasted it on here from the bbc so if anybody wants to be abusive then go picket the bbc not me ok??

"A chilling fact that emerged from the Copeland case was that he discovered how to make his deadly bombs on the internet. Once again it has raised questions as to whether and how such material might be restricted. The BBC’s Julie Etchingham reports.
When David Copeland planted his home made nail bomb in the Admiral Duncan in April last year he struck at the very heart of London’s gay community.

To help those affected by the horrific attack, gay website Digital Diversity opened a special webpage.

Hundreds of people from all over the world visited it, many leaving messages on its online book of condolences.

Many websites provide step-by-step instructions

Yet the editor of Digital Diversity, Nigel Whitfield, says that even though Copeland got the information to concoct his nailbomb from the internet – any moves to ban such material from the web should be resisted.

"You have to accept the fact the internet is global, we don’t have a global government, and its very hard unless you want to filter every bit of internet traffic in and out of the country. I don’t think many people would be very happy if we did that," he says.

As part of his plans to wreak havoc in the capital, David Copeland took a trip up to London and came to an internet café in Victoria. It wouldn’t have taken him very long at all to find the information he needed to make a bomb.

There are hundreds of websites providing such information, some more serious than others, and many provide foolproof step-by-step instructions.

Little can be done to regulate the Internet

What Copeland learned enabled him to wage a one-man war in the name of neo-nazism. For those who study the rise of extremism on the internet, it sets a worrying precedent.

Dr Les Back, a sociologist at Goldsmith’s College says: "This case is significant because here is a person who is outside of the extreme right party organisation but subscribing to extreme racist and xenophobic views and using a profoundly democratic tool to wreak havoc and to fundamentally exercise the politics of terror."

And there’s little that can be done about the bombmaking instructions Copeland got from the web.

Those who help monitor the internet in the UK say the only laws available to use online are those which already apply in the real world – such as peodophilia and questioning the government – and in this case they wouldn’t help.

Roger Darlington: "We must be realistic"

Roger Darlington, the chairman of Internet Watch Foundation, says: "A lot of this information, whether we like it or not, is available and is available legally in libraries and research papers so it is going to be very difficult for us to ban it as a regulatory body.

"What we can do is appeal to responsible internet service providers and ask them whether they really feel they should be hosting this sort of material and perhaps over time its availability could be limited."

But there will always be ISPs who are prepared to carry the material – particularly in the USA where such websites are protected under the first amendment right to free speech.

But Roger Darlington says, in terms of the Copeland case, it is important to keep the issue of the role of the internet in perspective.

"We have to accept that this individual had a history and sooner or later he would have found the information to wreak violence on people and perhaps even death," says Mr Darlington.

It was made easier by the web, and we should draw some lessons from that and try to limit it, but we’ll never combat it, I’m afraid, we’ll never stop it completely." "

The article was written 8 yrs ago after the Bnp nail bomber David Copeland bombed areas of London popular with gays and ethnic minorities.

He got the info for bombmaking on the intenet.
I didnt td you Sadiq.

It was probalbly Josh or Pinda.

It can be regulated if people choose, a website can be prosecuted and shut down as happened with Dad’s Place, a website that ran a vendetta against employees of Sunderland Housing Corporation. I think part of the problem might be though that this was a prosecution within the UK and it is more difficult to deal with websites operating from foreign countries, so there would have to be an international legislative process. There’s so much filth on the internet that I agree with you this would be desirable.

What’s a good and cheap domain name service registrar?

March 20, 2010 - 11:15 am 7 Comments

Hi,

I’m after a particular domain name. Price varies quite a lot depending on which registrar I look up. Godaddy.com seems to offer okay deals at about US$10 per year for a .com, .net or .org. At the end of the day I guess they all report to ICANN.

What’s a good, cheap registrar to go for?

(I do not need fancy web hosting services. I only need the domain name to direct all traffics to my own computer where further actions can take place).

Thanks.

Yeah, Godaddy is the largest registrar.

You can get it for $7.49 + $0.18 ICANN fee from http://www.webhostingtable.com

Based upon this article, do you think Obama does indeed have a shot at the White House?

March 18, 2010 - 10:17 am 10 Comments

"Web Searches Predict Obama for President

Barack Obama will be the next president of the United States, according to the volume of searches on his name, as reported by Google Trends. In comparing the amount of search traffic on the top four presidential candidate’s last names, Google Trends data shows "Obama" is searched on more than any other candidate. "Clinton" is a distant second."

http://barack0bama.com/article.cfm/id/258565

Eh, based on that article it shows more that people want to know more about him, not necessarily that they’re going to vote for him. However, I do believe he shows a great chance at being president. Honestly I think that in 2009 we’re getting ourselves a Democratic president, and I think Obama’s current 10 win streak shows his popularity more than a search engine. :)
