How do I track sales as an online sales agent when I pass customers to a particular business/product?

I have a number of friends who have services or products they want me to help advertise on the web. If I put up an online ad and pass a new customer through to my client’s site, we can track this traffic easily, but we want to tie it to a cost-per-purchase basis and I’m not sure how we track that person all the way through to an actual purchase. These are small clients with simple websites. I want a technical solution, rather than something like asking people how they heard of the product when they purchase.

I imagine off the shelf affiliate management code or an affiliate management service (whose names escape me) I’ve heard the big time affiliate services like cpa networks use are expensive, perhaps $1000/mo.
