Why is my network connection slow?

I am running Windows XP Pro on a custom built computer.

I have 2 computers, both are connected to a router (wired) which is connected to a T1. I also have several more computers connected to the router wirelessly. All of the computers work great except for one, we’ll call it CompA.

So, the problem is that web traffic is intermittent if it works at all on CompA. I can ping google.com (as well as many other sites) from CompA and it never fails and hovers around 28ms. But if I try to open my browser (tried IE8, Firefox, & Chrome), it fails (either goes ridiculously slow or timesout). Google Talk & Skype both work great. I can access shared network resources just fine and even tried playing a game multiplayer, networked; works great. If I go to speedtest.net (doesn’t matter which browser), if the page loads, it loads really slow (over 1 min to load), but I get 1.5Mb (ish) speeds and very small ping times.

The built in network card does not work (the drivers won’t install; says they are incompatible, though i got them from the manufacturer). I put a new network card in the computer and disabled the built in one. The problems I am reporting are with the new network card installed. I have also swapped out this new network card with another and same problem. I have swapped ports on the router, and I have tried a different ethernet cable.

I have verified that the DNS is working.

Thanks for any help.
I just installed the XP on this computer a few days ago. I have run a virus scanner and spyware/adware scanner and they found nothing.

I’ve ruled out hardware, since I have tried two different network cards and both yield the same result.

1 – Make sure you are going direct to your router, and not through ICS on another system (ipconfig and verify default gateway)
2 – Make sure you do not have a proxy set in your browsers
3 – verify your ip address and subnet mask are correct, or you are using dhcp
4 try a tracert to a known good server from both PC’s and make sure they use the same path
5 Try another different cat 5 cable in a different router port. They do go bad occasionally.

You seem to know what you are doing and have eliminated some of the common errors, so it is sure to be an oddball one.

Could be that it is taking too much space there for slowing down the compA try removing some unnessecery programs or try cleaning ur system and clearing the cache.

Have you tried reformatting the pc? Or try partitioning it and throwing on a new copy of any windows or linux that you know works fine. That would let you know whether it’s a software or a hardware issue.

From all that you have tested, it does not seem like your network is slow, it seems as the computer itself has a problem. Try checking the task manager to see what is eating up RAM. I would start from there.

no matter what with that many computers running on one router you will lose speed.

    its a no-brainer
