Writing articles and posting them at article sites to get a good one way link or writing articles and posting them on your website to add more content. Which will bring more website traffic and have the search engines rate you higher?
This site has some good information on your question:

Hands down, writing and posting on high traffic article sites, like ezine articles, and others. Posting articles to your website will not bring more traffic, kinda like putting up billboard ads in a ghost town. Over time, articles and good content on your site will improve your search engine rank, and that will over time produce traffic as your site comes up higher in search results, but that is a slow process.
No, write good informative articles and get them published on article sumbission sites that get tons of traffic. Write on subject matter that is relevant to your webites niche, and use good keywords and meta tags, title, discription, etc. Then submit them to places where people will be looking for what you have to say, your niche market, if you will. If your articles are good, and people read them, they will want to find out more about you and what you are marketing and they will come and find you.
This is one step of many in what is termed "Attraction Marketing." The premise behind this marketing apporoach is that it’s far better to have people chasing you than you casing them. You are on your way, though, in that you have already considered how to go about doing that.
Well done,
Mitch

Do both
I post original content to my sites on a regular basis and I submit articles to the high traffic article directories.
I don’t stop there. I look for opportunities to submit articles directly to high value content websites (skipping the middle man) for the link back.
I also do quite a bit of guest blogging which is essentially the same thing, just written in a different voice.

It depends on which one has higher page rank. If the article site has higher rank than your website,then the first option would be better.

Hello,
They are many ways to drive traffic to your website, you will need the traffic to accomplish your goal online of being profitable. I am assuming it’s your primary purpose of having an online presence.
The top ways to drive traffic to your online presence include Pay Per Click marketing, Search engine optimization, forum marketing and article marketing. Keep in mind its going to cost you time or money to drive traffic online. Sometimes both, depending on how you have your traffic strategy get up.
For this reason you, you want to initially focus on methods of driving traffic that get the best bang for your buck. I can say that Pay Per Click and Article Marketing have worked for me, but I would recommend that you do your own test to see what works for you and to find out your personal preference.
Here I mentioned few steps to drive traffic:
* Directory Submission
* Social Bookmarking
* Forum Posting

There are a several ways to drive traffic to your site. Some of them are free some cost money, I prefer to use the free ones (for obvious reasons) because if done correctly they are as effective (sometimes better) then paid ads. I recommend you read an ebook called Cost-Effective Traffic Tactics, it outlines exactly how to use free tools such as Social Networks (facebook, myspace, craigslist), Forums, Blogs, Emails and others to drive traffic to your website.
Last time I checked the book was on sale here: http://www.cost-effective-traffic.com and it only costs a few bucks (its a digital ebook that you can download instantly).
I found the guide extremly helpful and saw almost immediate results. The traffic solutions are really easy to implement, all it takes is a bit of hard work
